The Environment
The mission of the Cool Chain Association (CCA) is to improve the global transportation and handling of perishables and temperature sensitive products for the benefit of consumers and supply chain participants. The CCA recognizes that the energy required in both producing and distributing products such as fresh produce, can contribute to total global carbon emissions. However, the CCA also believes that reducing waste at any point within the total distribution chain can also reduce unnecessary carbon emissions and it therefore actively supports the development of its Cool Chain Quality Indicators (CCQI) as the recognized industry standard. The Cool Chain Association will also promote the use of energy efficient equipment and technologies which help to conserve energy.

CCA CO2-emissions Report 2008, by Tony Wright, Exelsius and Jean Pierre Emond, University of Florida
“This study has looked at the issue of CO2 emissions within the transportation environment and with particular emphasis on its impact within the Perishables & Temperature Sensitive Products sector. It has taken data from a variety of reports and also conducted its own analysis within defined scenarios of comparison. Nevertheless, it is clear that air transport has suffered a disproportionate amount of media attention in relation to its CO2 contribution, perhaps largely because of phrases such as ‘food-miles’ which have caught the imagination of the general public. This is not to suggest that air transport is not a source of CO2 emissions, but as can also be seen from the report’s brief look at how other distribution sectors are responding, it is a matter of presenting clear facts.….learn more, get a copy of the report!”
